ARTIST STATEMENT:

Southern California's silvery light and muted colors suit the mood I wish to convey in painting.  Major influences are Tonalism and California Impressionism.  My quiet, well-modulated colors are developed from local geography, travels, memory and imagination.  Rather than profound incursions into the American psyche, my paintings are statements of admiration for what little remains of California's natural landscape.

Still, art is a language rooted in history:  Its visual cues identify the artist and the time in which he lives.  My attitude toward the land is a result of agrarian ancestors and a contemporary interest in preservation.  Painting is a means of exploring this dichotomy.

THE STORY OF MY LIFE....

I'm a native southern Californian and grew up in San Diego.  In the late 1960's I served in VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) in Los Angeles,  assisting  with literacy and health in Head Start , and with a youth art program for the Parks and Recreation Department.

I  studied art under many fine private, community college and University instructors, and for many years taught others in my studio.  My love for education merged with business acumen during the years I served on the Board of Trustees for my local library.

Gardening to attract birds with low-water-need plants has been a delightful hobby, and an artistic pursuit in itself.  In addition to birds,  weasels, deer, coyotes and a huge population of lizards reside in or visit my garden.  As a member of many conservation and birding organizations I understand the valuable contribution that home gardens can make to the health of wildlife.

Art, in many forms, has been a constant in my life.  I've won some awards, about which my upbringing forbids me to boast.  Many excellent galleries have represented and encouraged my work.  And many wonderful people collect it, for which I am greatful.
